Njordrum is an architectural firm based in Aarhus that has a sustainable approach to architecture and construction.
A timber module of 4x16m is used as a starting point for all the projects. This allows for faster and better assembly and disassembly, and its flexibility makes it adaptable to a wide range of functions, from Summerhouses to Kindergartens and offices.
During my time in Njordrum, I have worked interdisciplinary as an architect and sustainability specialist.
I got the chance to work as a “pure” architect by sketching and producing presentation material for competition and clients while doing an extended calculation of the modular system’s CO2 emissions.
At the end of my collaboration, I was able to provide a life cycle assessment of their modules that showed a 30% lower impact on the environment compared to standard solutions in Denmark.
All the material presented has been used for project communication during meetings with customers, for price estimates and as competition entry material.
Based on the hotspots that emerged during the LCA screening, a set of reduction strategies was proposed and calculated:
The goal set is based on the Reduction Roadmap's calculations: 4,5 KgCO2 eq./m2 /y.
The results were refined and translated in a set of presentation materials so that it could be used for both internal and external communication.
The LCA screening showed that the base modular system is good if compared with standard solutions, but there is a huge carbon reduction potential:
The current module system 1 has a 30% lower environmental impact (GWP) than standard solutions on the Danish market.
This impact can be reduced by up to 47% by using bio-based materials. The best results so far are obtained by using wood fibre insulation.
The results are well within the building regulations' requirements.
It is expected that the environmental impact falls within 4.5 CO2eq. /m2 /y, when updated Danish emission factors for renewable energy are released.
In conclusion, a set of further quantitative and qualitative actions that could be taken to improve the integration of sustainability in the design process, to reduce the environmental impact of the projects, and to communicate the sustainability efforts of the company better have been presented.
